Summary....June 2004 brought a dramatic turnaround to central Oklahoma's weather as we went from having one of our driest Mays ever to our wettest month overall in almost 3 years. Northwest flow aloft dominated the area's weather pattern for much of the month, with storms that developed over the High Plains during the late afternoon and evening hours frequently sweeping over Oklahoma on many mornings throughout the month. The most notable storm to hit Norman was one of the few to hit during the afternoon. The sky turned a very dark greenish color around 3pm on the 2nd as a severe thunderstorm moved in from the north, bringing winds strong enough to snap small branches off trees and dropping hailstones up to 1 inch in diameter. Small rotating thunderstorms embedded in a mass of tropical rain briefly developed over the area on the 9th, producing some wind damage and possible tornadoes east of the OKC area. Unseasonably cool air regularly moved into the area for much of the month due to the persistent trough that formed downstream of the strong ridge that built into Alaska and western Canada - there were several days where places in Alaska and northwestern Canada got up into the low to mid 90s while we here in Oklahoma only reached the low to mid 80s. Even Inuvik NT, north of the Arctic Circle and less than 50 miles from the Arctic Ocean, reached 86F during that heat wave. Not too often Alaska, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories see more days of temps of 85F or higher than Oklahoma the last two weeks of June.
Turlock CA had zero rainfall in June 2004, ending the 2003-04 season with 10.01 inches of rain. As mentioned last month, this was the 12th year in a row Turlock finished the rainfall season with more than 10 inches of rain....they just barely squeaked past that mark this year. Average annual rainfall for Turlock is 13.25 inches.
