Summary....June 2003 finally brought some decent rains into central Oklahoma, with rain and thunder being observed nearly every day here in Norman during the first half of the month. Heavy rain and frequent lightning occurred over Norman for about three hours on the 10th, with street flooding in parts of the town. The persistent trough of low pressure over the northeastern United States also helped keep temperatures and humidity in check here during the first three weeks of the month. That changed around the time the summer solstice arrived, as southwesterly flow aloft set up over the Plains and allowed very moist air from the Gulf of Mexico to return to the region. Low, grungy clouds raced northward over Norman each morning from the 22nd-24th - signs of the deep moisture which helped fuel some awesome severe weather outbreaks further north. Hail roughly the size of cantaloupes occurred in Nebraska on the 22nd, and literally dozens of tornadoes hit South Dakota on the 24th. The air about 5000-8000 feet above the ground was too warm for many storms to occur in Oklahoma on these days - we had to wait for the cold front to come through on the 25th-26th to get much in the way of storms. The storms in Oklahoma were not severe but did drop up to 3 inches of rain in parts of southwestern and north-central Oklahoma. The air which followed the cold frontal passage was quite chilly for late June - with temperatures struggling to get into the 70s on the 26th and dropping into the mid 50's on the 27th...impressive for a place which the temperature rarely drops below 65F during the summer.

Turlock CA had no rain at all during June - and finished out the 2002-03 rainfall season at 12.02 inches. The annual average rainfall for Turlock is 13.25 inches.
