Summary....Central Oklahoma was one of the few places in the nation that escaped hotter and drier than average weather in the summer of 2002. Through the end of August, the temperature had not yet reached 100F this year in Oklahoma City or Norman. If OKC goes the rest of the year without reaching 100F, that would be the first time that has happened there since 1997. Oklahoma actually got a slight taste of fall around mid-month as a strong cold front moved into the region, but the cooler weather only lasted a day as tropical air quickly spread back north. Some impressive thunderstorms visited the area during the last week of the month. Many lightning strikes occurred in rapid succession very close to my location on the morning of the 25th. The most destructive wind event I have experienced in my 3 years here blew through Norman early on the 27th, as winds of at least 65 mph snapped many large tree limbs all over the city.

Turlock CA finished its third consecutive month with zero rainfall - not even a trace. This was the first time that has happened there since July through September of 1993. Turlock had gone 103 consecutive days without any rainfall through the end of the month.
