Summary....Although the mean temperature in Feb 2001 was near average, that does not even begin to explain the real story of central Oklahoma's weather this month. Wild temperature swings were this area's main weather story in Feb 2001. It seemed as if all month, the area went through regular intervals of a day and a half of spring followed by four days of winter. The transition from spring to winter was often quite severe. The night of the 8th/9th went from muggy and 65 degrees to chilly and 33 degrees in the span of an hour as a sharp cold front went through the area just before midnight. The morning of the 14th was warm and humid also with temperatures in the low 60s. By that evening, temperatures were in the upper 20s with thunder, lightning, and freezing rain. Trees, power lines, and cars were coated with 1/4 inch of ice by the time the ice storm ended on the 15th. Another ice storm on the last day of the month gave roads a thin but dangerous coating of ice and sleet. Only one storm during the month was not accompanied by subfreezing surface temps, but did give us a quick line of thunderstorms with pea-sized hail on the morning of the 24th. The storms were followed by an afternoon of strong southwest winds that knocked small branches off trees and peeled shingles off rooftops. Precipitation was around 200% of average for the month. Although the soil was frozen at month's end, it was quite saturated due to all of the rain and melted ice.
Turlock CA had 2.73 inches of rain during Feb 2001, and the season total was 9.77 inches by month's end. Early on Mar 2, 2001, the season total went above 10 inches - making the 2000-01 season the 9th in a row Turlock has had more than 10 inches of rain.
