Summary....The third milennium began with a deep, powdery snowpack covering central Oklahoma. The snow pack was between 2 and 4 inches deep here in Norman on the 1st, and did not completely melt until the 7th in the southeast part of the city. Another 1 1/2 inches of snow and sleet fell here on the 17th, which melted quickly since the temperature rose above freezing shortly after the snow stopped falling. Temperatures during the month were for the most part near seasonal averages. No significant warm spells occurred during the month. A brief cold snap hit the area on the 19th-20th, but no intense or long-lasting cold spells affected the area either. Precipitation was above average during Jan 2001 thanks largely in part to a 1.82 inch soaking in the month's final weekend. Temperatures ranged between 32F and 39F during this entire rain event so Norman just narrowly missed receiving its third ice storm of the winter.

I have returned to the flat red plains of Oklahoma after a 10-month stay in the confines of the San Joaquin Valley. The place I currently live is about 2 1/2 miles southeast of where I lived from Aug 1999 to Feb 2000.

For those who are wondering, my old weather instruments are at my parent's house in Turlock CA - and are still being regularly maintained. My mom reported that 3.55 inches of rain fell there in Jan 2001, which more than doubled the season rainfall total. Total rainfall there since Jul 1, 2000 now stands at 7.04 inches.
