hurricane ivan

september 15-16, 2004

Following are captures from video taken throughout my chase of Hurricane Ivan. Please click on an image to see its larger version.

At 7:45am on the 15th, northbound traffic was already backing up in Florence MS - about 150 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico.
The seagulls had a pretty good idea what was to come as well.
I spent much of the hurricane seeking shelter inside the parking garage of the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center in Mobile AL. The strong winds blew rain all throughout the inside of the garage.
At 11:49pm CDT the pressure was down to 29.10 inches, or 986 millibars (keep in mind the pressure displayed on the watch is not corrected to sea level, and was reading about .15 inch too low).
By 1:49am CDT, pressure had fallen to about 28.70 inches or 973 millibars. The pressure at this location bottomed out at about 28.25 inches or 958 millibars at 3:03am.
Daylight revealed quite a bit of tree damage.
The streets of Mobile AL were hidden beneath several inches of leaves and twigs the next morning.
This McDonald's sign was one of many fast food signs throughout the city blown out by the wind.
I guess this Burger King isn't going to be selling burgers for a while.
The most significant damage I witnessed was this steeple that was knocked off the roof of this church.
Close up shot of the steeple.
